InformationWS.PEMS: from emission monitoring to Emission Intelligence

WS.PEMS is Weel & Sandvig's Predictive Emission Monitoring System for combustion assets, designed to support everything from a single emission source to large-scale deployments spanning numerous facilities, regions and equipment types.

The system is used by major oil and gas companies across the world in onshore, offshore and marine applications. It supports monitoring of combustion equipment such as gas turbines, boilers, heaters, engines, flares and vessels, and can be applied across upstream, midstream, downstream and shipping environments.

WS.PEMS supports both operational and regulatory use cases, including compliance monitoring, OGMP methane reporting, NOx taxation, greenhouse gas reporting and internal sustainability programmes. The platform can monitor and calculate relevant emission components such as methane, CO₂, NOx, CO and other combustion-related parameters, depending on the application and available data.

At the core of WS.PEMS are first-principles digital twins of combustion equipment. These models use mass balance, energy balance, combustion knowledge, process data and validation measurements to reconstruct how each emission source behaves under real operating conditions. This provides a physically grounded and auditable foundation for emission predictions.

On top of this first-principles foundation, WS.PEMS includes an AI-enabled analytics layer. This expands the system from traditional emission monitoring into Emission Intelligence. Instead of only reporting emission values, the platform can help identify abnormal combustion behaviour, sensor drift, data inconsistencies, methane signatures, efficiency losses and opportunities for operational improvement.

The platform is built for centralised deployment. Data from many emission sources and facilities can be brought together in one system, enabling standardised reporting, cross-facility benchmarking, fleet-wide visibility and identification of best-performing or abnormal units.

WS.PEMS is also designed to work within customers' existing digital environments. Through an MCP interface, validated emission and operational data can be made available to approved in-house AI tools, enabling natural-language queries, automated analysis and agent-based workflows while keeping data under the customer's governance and cybersecurity framework.

The result is a platform that combines practical industrial experience, first-principles combustion knowledge, validated PEMS data and advanced AI integration to support more actionable emission reduction, improved energy efficiency and stronger operational decision-making.
